The Garden on Sisalstraat One embodies the memory of Sandy's mother, Urnice, and the childhood garden in Aruba where she grew up. Each design element reflects her recollections, the faint sound of her father’s Mexican records coming through the open kitchen door, the pain felt when their animals would be brought to the butchers and the many fruit trees in which she would climb and find solace.
The Garden On Sisalstraat One is the first out of five looks designed for Sandy’s digital fashion collection: “there”. The collection in its entirety proposes an alternative method to archive stories, lived experiences, and memories of people with roots in the Caribbean region. More specifically, it depicts places that no longer exist outside of the memories within her interviewees’ minds. “there” is not in denial of the subjective nature of its collection and instead deliberately deploys it to amplify the voices of those who have long been denied agency over their own representations.
